What is PMP Certification?
The
Project Management Professional (PMP)® certification is a professional credential awarded by the
Project Management Institute (PMI).
PMP validates project leadership and project-management expertise across
predictive, agile and hybrid ways of working, rather than being limited to a particular industry or project methodology.
PMP exam preparation therefore requires more than memorising project-management terminology. Candidates need to understand how project professionals make decisions, lead people, manage delivery, respond to changing conditions and connect projects with organizational objectives.
What's New in the 2026 PMP Exam?
PMI launched the updated PMP examination on
9 July 2026. The revised examination reflects changes in modern project leadership and places increased emphasis on practical project situations and business outcomes.
Important areas emphasized in the updated examination include:
- Artificial Intelligence (AI) in project environments
- Sustainability
- Stakeholder engagement
- Outcomes and value delivery
- Business impact
- Leadership and people skills
- Decision-making
- Predictive project management
- Adaptive/agile approaches
- Hybrid project management
- Real-world project scenarios
PMI also changed the weighting of the three examination domains:
| PMP Exam Domain |
Current Weight |
| People |
33% |
| Process |
41% |
| Business Environment |
26% |
| Total |
100% |
Predictive, adaptive/agile and hybrid approaches are incorporated across the domains rather than being isolated into separate examination sections. PMI's 2026 Exam Content Outline indicates that approximately
40% of items represent predictive approaches, with the remaining approximately
60% divided between adaptive/agile and hybrid approaches; the exact distribution can vary by examination form.
Current PMP Exam Pattern 2026
The current PMP examination consists of:
- 180 questions
- 240 minutes
- Two 10-minute breaks
- Scenario-based and interactive question formats
- Examination available at Pearson VUE testing centres and through online delivery options, subject to PMI's requirements
PMI identifies multiple question formats, including single- and multiple-response questions, drag-and-drop questions and scenario-oriented content.
Important
The current PMP examination should not be described using the older:
- 200-question format
- 175 scored + 25 pretest format
- Old five-process-group examination structure
Palium Skills' PMP preparation is aligned to the
July 2026 PMP Exam Content Outline.
